KUCHING: Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom described the passing of Senate President Datuk Mutang Tagal as a loss of a colourful son of Sarawak.

The Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Minister said that the deceased was known for his academic excellence.

“Personally, I know Mutang as a friend. He was not only a lawyer but also one of the finest students.

“Therefore, we lost a colourful son of Sarawak,” he told reporters after attending the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay held at Bintulu Civic Centre this morning (May 11).

Dr Rundi, who is also the Kemena assemblyman, also said that Sarawak has lost a great figure, especially among the Dayak community, who has reached the highest level in the Senate.

“It is unfortunate, and we know God loves him more. My deepest condolences. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

“Let us all share in the family’s grief. This is the most difficult time of their lives, and may they find the strength and always keep them in our prayers,” he said.

Mutang, 70, breathed his last at the National Heart Institute, Kuala Lumpur at 11.46 am on Friday (May 10).

He had been undergoing treatment at the heart institute after falling ill during a working trip to Azerbaijan on May 6.
