PUTRAJAYA, 4 Oct: The overall Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) tour in Sabah and Sarawak could be an alternative to returning the prestigious race to Borneo at next edition.

LTdL Chief Operating Officer, Emir Abdul Jalal said that the approach could be considered if the Federal Government and state governments agree to give both regions an opportunity to host the race.

"If we combine Sabah and Sarawak, we have a racing infrastructure and do not need large relocations. The cost is also about the same as the cost of subsistence in Peninsular Malaysia", he said when meeting with reporters after LTdL 2026 ended here today.

According to Emir, the cost of transportation would increase if routes on the peninsula were combined with Sabah and Sarawak.

So, he said it was more appropriate for it to be held entirely in Sabah and Sarawak.

He said almost RM5 million was needed to handle team relocation, air cargo and the preparation of new racing infrastructure.

"We see that the RM5 million can bring a lot of benefits to cycling development. It would be better to use that amount for various cycling development programmes", he said.

Meanwhile, Emir said Mount Jerai could potentially be retained as one of the LTdL's climbing locations in the upcoming edition after receiving a warm welcome from cycling fans.

He said the climb was unique in that it offered a steady 10% gradient for about 10 kilometers.

"It's a challenge we've never had before. If we were in the Cameron Highlands, there might be a higher part but there's also a hiking trail before climbing back. On Mount Jerai, the climb continues", he said.

According to Emir, the audience reception along the route of Mount Jerai at this edition was also one of the factors that prompted the organisers to consider maintaining the location.

"If we can, we'd really like to get back together next year. But we need to look at the rules of authority.

"If the extension of the route can reach Mount Jerai, perhaps we will return there", he said.

Meanwhile, Emir said the 2026 LTdL event received a positive assessment from the commissioner of the International Cycling Union (UCI) who monitored the technical aspects as well as overall race management.

He said the assessment showed that LTdL 2026 was organised in compliance with UCI-mandated rules and could potentially receive an all green rating again.

He said the success of this edition was a collaboration between various parties including Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), National Sports Council (MSN), state government, local authorities as well as government agencies involved. - TVS
