KUCHING (Oct 8): A 37-year-old man was fined RM900 in default two weeks in jail by the Magistrates’ Court here today for buying an illegal lottery ticket.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali imposed the fine on Muhammad Yazid Lihi after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
The Section carries a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or a jail term of up to six months, or both upon conviction.
Muhammad Yazid committed the offence at an eatery in Kenyalang Commercial Centre here at around 6.40pm on Oct 4.
Based on the facts of the case, a team of police raided the premises during an ‘Op Dadu’ operation and arrested Muhammad Yazid for suspected involvement in illegal lottery activities.
Police also seized a mobile phone and RM14 from him.
The investigation revealed Muhammad Yazid was buying an illegal lottery ticket as the mobile phone contained a text with numbers for online lottery betting.
ASP Arman Ibrahim prosecuted the case while Muhammad Yazid was unrepresented by legal counsel.
