Man in Kuching fined RM1,000 for buying illegal lottery ticket

KUCHING (Sept 24): A 24-year-old man was fined RM1,000 in default three weeks in jail by the Magistrates’ Court here today for buying an illegal lottery ticket.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali imposed the fine on Teo Yinn Chiong after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The Section carries a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or a jail term for up to six months or both, upon conviction.

Teo committed the offence at a shop in Taman Sin Sin here at around 4pm on Sept 22, 2024.

Based on the facts of the case, a team of police raided the premises during an Op Dadu operation and arrested Teo for suspected involvement in illegal lottery activities.

Seized from Teo were a mobile phone, a piece of paper, and RM185.

Investigation revealed that the paper contained numbers corresponding to a completed purchase of illegal lottery ticket.

ASP Arman Ibrahim prosecuted the case while Teo was unrepresented by counsel.
