The Miri sessions court sentenced a man to 10 months in jail and fined him RM50,000 for posting comments deemed offensive to Islam following the death of former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said John Mule anak Alai, 48, was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 with the improper use of network facilities.
“As the administrator of a Facebook account called ‘Bat Tuo Sai’, he posted comments insulting verses of the Quran and Abdullah on Astro Awani’s post reporting his death.
“MCMC takes a serious view of any misuse of digital platforms to insult religion, incite hatred, or undermine the harmony of this country’s multiracial and multi-religious society,” MCMC said in a statement today.
The commission also reminded the public to use social media prudently and responsibly, saying any content that “incites hatred or touches on racial, religious, and royal sensitivities” is liable to legal action.
