MIRI (Feb 1): A man suffered a heart attack during a fire that destroyed a rental room on the upper floor of a shop house on Jalan China here early on Sunday morning.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the victim was conscious and was treated on site by personnel from its Emergency Medical Rescue Services unit, before being sent to Miri Hospital.

“Acting on a call at 4.02am, teams from the Miri and Lopeng fire stations were rushed to the two-storey shop house.

“Despite their best efforts, the rental room was 100 per cent destroyed,” said Bomba in a statement.

The statement did not specify if the man was a tenant.

The firefighting operation concluded at 6.24am after overhaul works determined no further danger at the location.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
