KUCHING (Oct 6): The repair works at the Bintawa Hawker Centre and Wet Market here are expected to be completed before the end of the year, said Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

He stated that the roof at the Bintawa Wet Market has already been fixed and the remaining work at the market should conclude in a week or two.

“As for the repairs at the Bintawa Hawker Centre, MBKS (Kuching South City Council) is giving its best, hoping to get it all done by early next month,” he said during his Facebook live session ‘Shall WEE Talk’ yesterday.

He said these in response to local residents’ enquiries about the latest development on the Bintawa Hawker Centre and Wet Market’s repair works.

Wee said the repark works are progressing smoothly and the city council aims to wrap it up by early next month.

He mentioned that the contractor is playing its part to make sure that this goal will be achieved for the benefits of all.

However, he expressed concern that the current rainy season might delay the progress of the works.

“Towards the end of the year, rainy days are inevitable. To make sure that we can get the repair works done on time, MBKS has requested the contractor to speed up (the works) during good weather,” he said.

The mayor is confident that the contractor will adhere to the request and deliver the project as scheduled.

Wee observed that the contractor has shown great responsibility and efficiency throughout the project, contributing to its smooth progress, thus far.

“The contractor has responded accordingly to all the requests, minor and major, from the hawkers. This is the level of cooperation and compatibility that the contractor has offered.

“It is not easy to get a suitable contractor and we are pleased that we have picked the right one for this project. Not only is the contractor committed to delivering the project but it also tries its best to meet the many demands from the hawkers,” he said.

Therefore, the mayor expressed full confidence in the contractor’s ability to complete the project on time.

“The contractor is capable of meeting the target, and this is absolutely a piece of good news for not just the city council but also the hawkers and citizens who will get to enjoy the improved facilities soon,” added Wee.
