KUCHING (Sept 24): Kuching South City Council (MBKS)’s iBuyBack project was recognised with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production Award at the recent JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Awards 2024 in Selangor.

In a statement today, Kuching City South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the award was a great honour for MBKS, as the iBuyBack project has been a transformative initiative in the endeavours to establish a cleaner and more environmentally friendly Kuching South.

“This recognition serves as a catalyst for us to persist in developing innovative solutions that empower our communities and align with global sustainability objectives,” he said.

He added that the iBuyBack project’s success demonstrates MBKS’s dedication to environmental sustainability and aligns with its broader initiatives for a low-carbon, eco-friendly city.

“As Kuching South continues to adopt technology for sustainability, this award signifies a crucial milestone in the Council’s ongoing pursuit of a greener future,” he added.

Introduced in 2022, the iBuyBack project is a user-friendly application designed to facilitate the exchange of recyclable materials.

The app aims to connect residents with recycling centres, enabling users to directly sell their recyclable waste to participating centres.

This initiative provides an incentive for residents to actively engage in recycling, fostering a community-wide culture of responsible consumption.

By making recycling convenient and accessible, iBuyBack empowers individuals to contribute positively to environmental conservation while being duly rewarded for their efforts.
