KUCHING (July 20): The Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) alongside the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universiti Malaya (UM) in an effort to strengthen education, particularly in the field of law in Sarawak.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the MoU demonstrates the state’s progress in strengthening higher education, aiming to establish and facilitate the launch of UM’s Bachelor of Law (Honours) programme in Sarawak.

“This initiative outlines our commitment to provide comprehensive educational opportunities from primary to higher education levels.

“By ensuring our students have access to a broad range of educational programmes, we equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in various fields,” said Abang Johari.

His speech was read by MEITD minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, following the Sarawak Premier’s Debate Cup competition held at the lecture hall of Swinburne Sarawak here yesterday.

Signing the MoU on behalf of Swinburne Sarawak was its pro vice-chancellor and chief executive officer Prof Lau Hieng Ho, as UM was represented by its deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) Prof Dr Yatimah Alias, and MEITD was represented by its permanent secretary Adana Jed.

Abang Johari said the initiative includes developing a comprehensive legal education programme tailored to the needs of students in the state.

“By collaborating with UM, we aim to provide our students with exceptional opportunities for growth and development in the legal field,” he said.

He added that the partnership aligns with the state’s vision to achieve high-income status through strategic initiatives in education, innovation and talent development.

Speaking on the competition, Sagah said debating skills are crucial for academic success and catalyse students to become future leaders.

Also present was MEITD deputy minister Datuk Francis Harden Hollis.
