“The cafe is a legend in Maong Bazaar, famous for its curry chicken rice, even after the owner passed away and his children took over the business,” said a regular customer.

“It has a unique local taste. I often come here with friends for lunch. The cafe is one of our favorite places to meet, and the food always brings back fond memories.”

The customer added that Nam Kwong’s curry chicken rice has garnered a lot of positive reviews and frequently goes viral on social media.

“This place is nostalgic, a true legend of Maong Bazaar. As you can see, we even have to share tables,” he said with a chuckle.

Chou, one of the children who now manages the cafe, said Nam Kwong Cafe was established in 1974.

The siblings took over the business after their father passed away more than 10 years ago.

In addition to its signature curry chicken rice, the cafe offers a variety of other dishes, including kolo mee and fried noodles. The cafe serves breakfast and lunch.

“In the morning, we serve kolo mee and various noodle dishes, but from mid-morning onwards, our curry chicken rice is the star, especially during lunch,” Chou said.

Another family member, Chuo Mei Lee, the eldest of the siblings at 66 years old, has been at the helm of the curry chicken rice stall for more than 15 years, continuing her father’s legacy.

“Most customers come specifically for our ‘special’ curry chicken rice. The dish includes rice topped with chopped steamed chicken, braised and barbecued pork, boiled eggs, and a generous ladle of light curry sauce,” Mei Lee shared.

“This local style has become our signature dish, well-loved by our patrons.”

Mei Lee also expressed her pride in carrying on her father’s tradition of serving delicious food.

She noted that during busy hours, she often checks with customers to ensure their orders are correct.

“Sometimes, I visit the customers’ tables to double-check, especially when things get hectic. With so many customers, it’s easy for the staff to mix up orders,” she explained.

During peak hours, each sibling takes on specific duties, from managing the cashier to assisting in the dining area and beverage station, ensuring smooth and efficient service.

“We are grateful to our customers for their support over the years,” she said.
