MIRI (Sept 2): Over 100 students from SMK Luar Bandar Miri and SMK Bekenu attended a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) seminar as part of the ‘Pendidikan Luar Bandar Sabati-Petros’ programme.

The two-day event, which concluded on Aug 30, aimed at enhancing the academic performance of students in the Subis District.

Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Development Sarawak Datuk Rosey Yunus said the state government has repeatedly emphasised the importance of academic excellence, particularly in the promotion of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

“Focusing on key subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and Additional Mathematics, as well as social science modules like business and English is crucial,” she said when officiating at the closing ceremony of the seminar on Friday.

Rosey, who is also Bekenu assemblywoman, remarked that ‘achieving better SPM results is not merely about academic excellence, it is also about reducing disparities and realising one’s own potential’.

“We also hope to create a culture of excellence among the students by emphasising the importance of education, discipline, and continuous effort,” she said.

The programme is a collaboration between Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Sarawak (Sabati) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros).

Among those present were Subis District Education officer Rahayu Deli, SMK Bekenu principal Darmah Mudin, and SMK Luar Bandar Miri senior assistant (administration) Atoh Lu.
