Padawan Council addresses abandoned vehicles

KUCHING: Around 20 cases of abandoned vehicles along the roadsides in the Padawan area have been addressed this year, as reported by Tan Kai, the Chairman of the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

According to Tan Kai, the MPP has taken measures to relocate and clear these abandoned vehicles to safeguard other road users in the region.

“Specific procedures are adhered to before the removal of abandoned vehicles. This process is crucial to prevent disputes with owners,” he noted.

“Typically, a warning notice is affixed to the vehicle as an initial alert for seven days. If there is no response from the owner within this timeframe, the authorities will proceed with the removal,” Tan Kai explained.

“Numerous cases, particularly along Stephen Yong Road and the Matang area, have been managed due to owners’ inaction,” he added.

These statements were made during a conversation with journalists following his participation in the opening ceremony of the Awareness Programme for Health Promotion and Environmental Sustainability, held in conjunction with World Environmental Health Day 2024 at E-Mart Mall today (October 7).

Meanwhile, Ita Ling, the Acting MPP Secretary, highlighted the importance of the seven-day notice period to enable vehicle owners to claim their property before council intervention.

“It is essential for owners to respond within this timeframe, and it also allows the council to cross-verify information with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) about the owners,” she remarked.

“There are numerous instances of abandoned vehicles, and we have been actively engaging in campaigns and targeted initiatives to prevent such occurrences,” she added.

Furthermore, Tan Kai underscored that the MPP has initiated a campaign to repurchase damaged electronic devices from users to discourage indiscriminate disposal of such equipment.

“All collected electronic items are acquired by recycling firms to promote environmental sustainability,” he emphasized.
