KUCHING (Oct 11): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has reaffirmed the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government’s commitment to supporting the Unity Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, emphasising its role in maintaining political stability in Malaysia.
He stressed that political stability, along with peace and harmony, would make the country more attractive to foreign investors, benefiting both the nation and Sarawak.
“At the same time, GPS will always uphold the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) to ensure that our rights in the Federation of Malaysia will not be eroded at all costs and to continue to fight for our greater autonomy,” he said.
His text speech was read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian during a thanksgiving dinner in conjunction with the 78th birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at a hotel here tonight.
Abang Johari further highlighted Sarawak’s good fortune in having Wan Junaidi, describing him as a steadfast defender of the state’s rights under MA63, particularly during his tenure as Malaysia’s Law Minister.
He praised Wan Junaidi for his vision and determination in advocating for Sarawak’s rights.
“To date, we have been able to have more financial autonomy with the income from the State Sales Tax (SST), since it was implemented in 2019.
“And with additional income from SST and other economic generators, we have been able to implement countless number of projects worth billions of ringgit that will benefit the rakyat, including the financing of the countless number of houses of worships such as churches our Christian brothers and sisters, temples for our devotees and members of the Buddhism, Taoism, Baha’ism, Sikhism and Hinduism across Sarawak,” he added.
