KUCHING, May 22: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has high hopes that Kuching City FC (KCFC) can topple Johor Darul Ta’zim Football Club (JDT) in the Malaysia Cup final.
“Hopefully, we can win against Johor. At the very least, we will become a runner-up, but, if possible, I hope we can become the champion—that is even better,” he said during a dinner ceremony with community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) in Bintulu which was streamed live by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) tonight.
The Premier also praised KCFC for finishing the 2025-2026 Super League season in second place with 53 points—one point behind their closest rivals, Selangor FC, who secured 52 points—allowing them to quality for next year’s AFC Champions League Two.
“Imagine—yesterday we were only playing in ‘kampung’ (villages), now we are play at a higher level with other countries,” he said.
Among those present that night were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, and Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. — DayakDaily
