SIBU: Members of the public here are encouraged to get their Human Papillomavirus (HPV) immunisation jab at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said a total of 2,000 doses will be provided during the two-day programme taking place from September 28 to 29, running from 9 am to 3:30 pm.
The programme is organised by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Pelawan Service Centre in collaboration with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and the Malaysia Red Crescent Society (MRCS).
“Prior to today, we opened online registration, and so far, we have received more than 800 registrations.
“The programme is not limited to people from Pelawan; we welcome individuals from all parts of Sibu to come to this centre,” he said when met by reporters during a walkabout at the programme at UTS today (Sept 28).
He also hopes that by organising such a programme, they will be able to raise awareness about cervical cancer throughout Sarawak, particularly in the town.
“I would like to take this opportunity to promote awareness of HPV, which can cause cancer, most commonly cervical cancer in women.
“However, men can also be affected by certain cancers caused by the HPV virus. Therefore, we urge both men and women to come and receive the vaccine.
“Cervical cancer caused by HPV is highly preventable, especially if individuals receive the HPV vaccine early,” he added.
