KUCHING: The public are advised to plan their routes and avoid parking their vehicles along the roadside for the road closure during the Sarawak Harmony Walk 2024 event this Saturday (June 29).

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said in a press statement that the walk at Padang Merdeka starts at 5.30 am.

“The event, which is expected to draw around 5,000 participants, will feature a series of road closures starting from 6am and will continue until the event concludes to ensure smooth traffic flow and participant safety,” he said.

The affected roads include Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg (RTM traffic light) towards Padang Merdeka, Jalan Haji Taha towards Jalan Market, St. Mary traffic light towards Jalan McDougall, Jalan Pearl and Jalan Wawasan traffic lights, and Jalan Temple in front of Tua Pek Kong Temple.

To minimise traffic congestion, the police have recommended alternative routes for motorists. Vehicles on Jalan Tabuan from Jalan Simpang Tiga should proceed to Jalan Central Timur or via Jalan Ban Hock to avoid the Jalan McDougall traffic light closure.

Vehicles from Jalan Haji Taha are advised to make a U-turn at the Masjid Bahagian roundabout. Additionally, vehicles coming from Jalan Padungan should use Jalan Abell or Jalan Borneo to avoid congestion on Jalan Temple.

Participants and the general public are also advised to park their vehicles at designated locations such as Medan Pelita, Plaza Aurora, Plaza Merdeka, Hikmah Exchange, Sarawak Islamic Complex, and the Borneo Cultures Museum parking lot.

The parade will commence at Padang Merdeka, proceed through Jalan Masjid, Jalan Market, Jalan Gambier, Jalan Main Bazaar, Jalan Temple, Jalan McDougall, and return to Padang Merdeka for the conclusion.
