KUCHING, March 6: Children and families visiting Kuching Park can now enjoy a safer playground following the completion of upgraded playground safety flooring installed by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the upgrading works involved replacing worn-out playground surfaces with a new impact-absorbing rubber surface made from recycled Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) granules derived from used tyres, providing better cushioning to reduce the risk of injuries during play.

“What makes this project even more meaningful is that the material used comes from recycled tyres. Instead of becoming waste, these tyres are processed and turned into useful materials for public facilities.

“This supports the idea of a circular economy, where waste is transformed into valuable resources,” he said during the handover of the site here today.

With a contract sum of RM319,200, the project commenced on Dec 22, 2025 after the site was handed over to contractor Era Rafiqa Sdn Bhd.

“With the project now completed, we look forward to seeing children and families return to enjoy a safer, brighter and more welcoming playground here at Kuching Park,” he added.

Wee also said the project supports MBKS’ Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) as well as the council’s broader goal of becoming a more age-friendly city. — DayakDaily
