KUCHING (Oct 13): Paralympic gold medallist Bonnie Bunyau Gustin is living proof that being an ‘anak kampung’ is no barrier to achieving success at global stage, said Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
The Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said Bonnie deserves praise and recognition for the glory he has brought to Sarawak and Malaysia.
“Bonnie’s success in Paris Paralympics demonstrates to the world that with hard work, anyone can achieve success,” he said at an appreciation dinner organised by Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Serian branch in Serian on Friday night.
Bonnie, who hails from a village in Serian, reaffirmed his position as the world’s best in the men’s up to 72 kilogrammes (kg) category by successfully defending his gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics last month.
He not only retained his title but also broke his own world record of 231kg, setting a new record of 232kg on his final attempt.
At the dinner, Bonnie was awarded a lifetime membership as a DBNA member.
Meanwhile, DBNA deputy president Dr Charlie Ungang said that granting Bonnie a lifetime membership reflects DBNA’s appreciation for Bidayuh individuals who have excelled in their fields.
Also present at the dinner were Deputy Minister of Transport (Riverine and Marine) Dato Henry Harry Jinep, Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem, Advisor to the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Michael Manyin Jawong and Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus.
