KUCHING, July 6: A total of 288 out of 431 water supply projects funded by the Sarawak government have been completed as of July 2024.

Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi disclosed that 44 projects are currently under construction, while 99 others are in planning stages.

“Since 2018, the Sarawak government has allocated RM4 billion under the Alternative Funding scheme to implement all 304 water supply projects, which are currently in various stages of implementation.

“In addition, the Sarawak government has approved an allocation ceiling of RM809 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) for the implementation of another 127 water supply projects,” he said in a statement today.

Julaihi emphasised that these projects have increased water supply coverage, especially in rural areas from 61.9 per cent in 2018 to 70.5 per cent, raising overall water supply coverage in Sarawak to 85.4 per cent.

Furthermore, the Sarawak government will implement a programme to upgrade and replace old and dilapidated pipes along 2,742 kilometres in phases throughout Sarawak with an allocation of RM1.085 billion through Alternative Funding.

“Of the total allocation, a total of RM247 million has been designated for immediate implementation this year,” he added. — DayakDaily
