KUCHING, Jan 30: Sarawak is on track to make Malaysian sports history, with global football giant FC Barcelona showing exclusive interest in partnering with the State.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, confirmed that talks are underway for a memorandum of understanding (MoU), potentially to be signed by March 2026.
“From what has been given to us, the indication from them that they only want collaboration with Sarawak. No other part of Malaysia has been approached so far.
“They have approached Singapore and the Philippines. Malaysia? No. If it materialises, Sarawak will be the first one,” he said during a press conference held at Baitul Makmur 2 today.
Abdul Karim further explained that the partnership would go beyond football, covering sports development, coaching exchanges, and training opportunities for young athletes.
“Our coaches and athletes could go there, theirs could come here. We’re working out the details now for the MOU,” he added.
The minister added that Sarawak’s visit to Barcelona last year was met with high-level hospitality, underscoring the state’s growing international profile.
He also said Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) could also be roped in, linking sports with broader development initiatives. – DayakDaily
