Sarawak crowned overall champion at Para Sukma XXI, passes baton to Selangor

KUCHING (Sept 28): Sarawak celebrated a triumphant end to the 21st Malaysia Para Games (Para Sukma XXI) by reclaiming the overall championship title in a grand closing ceremony at Stadium Perpaduan here tonight.

The closing ceremony, graced by federal Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh; Sarawak’s Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; along with other key dignitaries, was a night of pride and joy for the host state.

The ceremony began with the playing of the national anthem, Negaraku, followed by Sarawak’s state anthem, Ibu Pertiwiku, and captivating opening performances.

Over 1,200 athletes from 15 contingents were then welcomed with roaring applause as they paraded into the stadium, accompanied by flag bearers and their respective mascots.

In her welcoming address, Fatimah commended the athletes’ indomitable spirit.

“Throughout the 21st Para Sukma, we have been deeply impressed and proud of the sportsmanship and camaraderie displayed, even amidst fierce competition for medals and rankings to bring pride to their respective teams and states.

“Each competing athlete not only represented their state but also demonstrated courage, sportsmanship, determination, solidarity, discipline, and immense dedication.

“In addition to the athletes’ triumphs over their own fears and physical limitations — whether on the court, in the arena, or on the track – we also witnessed incredible mental, physical, emotional, and social preparedness.

“Every para athlete who has fought in these arenas has proven themselves to be true warriors and champions. You are the real warrior and champion.

“Although only one winner emerges in each event, every participant is a true champion for showing extraordinary determination and effort. What matters most is the teamwork and fighting spirit that drive the success of our para athletes.

“Victory begins with the belief that all of you, our para-athletes, can achieve the impossible,” she said.

The event continued with a special video presentation showcasing memorable moments of athletes competing in their respective events.

Hannah, in her officiating speech, applauded the outstanding efforts of all athletes, noting that the Games were more than just a competition but a celebration of inclusivity and unity.

“The presence of Para athletes goes beyond mere participation. It’s no easy feat for them to qualify. The fact that these athletes represent their states is already proof of their greatness, let alone winning medals.

“I want to extend my congratulations to all athletes who have brought home medals for their states. Nearly every day at Para Sukma, national records and Para Sukma records have been broken.

“Congratulations on setting 22 new national records and 71 Para Sukma records.

“I want everyone to realise that the diversity in the abilities and qualifications of Para athletes in Malaysia is a strength. There is no such thing as weakness or limitation,” she said.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Best Athletes of Para Sukma XXI Sarawak 2024, awarded to Shahafiq Abdullah from the Sabah contingent for para swimming and Loh Chi Hui from the Pahang contingent for para archery.

This was followed by the declaration of Sarawak as the overall champion, having secured 82 gold, 53 silver, and 74 bronze medals.

The evening continued with the formal lowering of the Para Sukma XXI Sarawak 2024 flag, marking the conclusion of the Games.

In a symbolic gesture, Sarawak passed the Para Sukma flag to representatives from Selangor, the host for Para Sukma XXII in 2026.

Following this, several entertainment performances took place, including singing and a cultural presentation by the Selangor contingent featuring the Tarian Patenun.

The night sky was then illuminated by a spectacular fireworks display, bringing the event to a vibrant close.

With the baton now passed to Selangor for 2026, the spirit of Para Sukma remains strong as athletes, officials, and supporters eagerly anticipate the next chapter of Malaysia’s premier sports event for persons with disabilities.
