KUCHING (July 24): The Customs Department seized illicit cigarettes and various alcoholic beverages during a raid at a premises in Kenyalang Park around 11am on July 17.
Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya said the 68,888 sticks of cigarettes and 7,939.93 litres of alcoholic beverages seized were estimated to be worth RM346,075.67 inclusive of duties and taxes.
“During the raid, a 19-year-old local male, who identified himself as an employee at the premises, was detained to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement today.
Norizan added that the raid was carried out based on information received from a member of the public.
He said the modus operandi of the syndicate is to use premises which are rather hidden to store, sell and distribute the untaxed cigarettes and liquor to evade detection by the authorities.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
The department is calling for the public to assist in combating smuggling activities, particularly involving cigarettes, liquor, fireworks, drugs, vehicles and other illicit items.
