Sarawak dancers triumph at Asia Open Dance Championship

KUCHING (Sept 25): A team of dancers from Sarawak has won four Grand Awards, seven Gold Awards, and 18 Silver Awards at the 5th Asia Open Dance Championship.

The team from Tyng Dance Academy (TDA) further established Sarawak’s reputation in performing arts during the competition in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 14-17.

TDA’s Grand Awards included the Best School Award as well as the Outstanding Instructor Award for founder and principal Chan Tyng Tyng.

“We are incredibly proud to represent Sarawak and bring home these awards,” Tyng Tyng said in a statement.

“These achievements belong to our entire team, our supporters, and our home state of Sarawak.”

TDA dancer Geraldine Su also shone on the international stage, securing the Outstanding Dancer Award, Top Scorer Award, and National Solo Top Scorer.

The academy’s Gold Awards were for Lyrical Duo/Trio by Carmen Chaw and Geraldine Su; Modern Jazz Solo Senior A by Carmen Chaw; National Solo Primary B by Sylvia Ho Jimmy; National Solo Senior A by Geraldine Su; National Duo Senior B by Winnie and Janice; Duo and Trio Primary B – New Ballet Creation by Calla Roa Tayan Salang and Teo Wei Tien; and Ballet Repertoire or Fragment Solo Junior B by Geraldine Su.

The Silver Awards included Modern Jazz Solo Senior A won by Janice Liaw and Joycelyn Yap; Lyrical Solo Senior A by Janice Liaw; Ensemble Lyrical Senior B by a group of seven dancers; National Solo Junior B by Germaine Hii; National Solo Senior B by Irelene Chan; Ballet Repertoire or Fragment Solo Senior B by Irelene Chan; Ballet Repertoire or Fragment Solo Junior B by Sharleen Teo; and Ballet Repertoire or Fragment Solo Primary B by Teo Wei Tien.

The other Silver Awards were earned by Germaine Hii and Jasmine Kho in Ballet Repertoire or Fragment Solo Junior A; Joycelyn Yap in Ballet Repertoire or Fragment Solo Senior A; Jessie Chee in Demi Character Children A; Thryssa Lim in Ballet Repertoire or Fragment Solo Primary B; Heidi Wong in Demi Character Children B; Mevanise Chai in Ballet New Creation Solo Primary A; Avril Tang in Ballet New Creation Solo Junior B; and Tryna Wong in Ballet New Creation Solo Primary B.
