BINTULU (July 24): The Sarawak Day 2024 celebration concluded with great fanfare at Lasar Kenyalang at the Old Bintulu Airport, drawing about 20,000 enthusiastic local and international attendees.
The event was a vibrant showcase of Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage and progress, marking a significant day for the people of the region.
The celebration, at 8pm, was honoured by the presence of the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
Also present were Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang; Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof; Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar; Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian; Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister and minister in-charge of the celebration Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom; and Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
The festivities kicked-off with a series of captivating performances that highlighted Sarawak’s diverse cultural tapestry, such as performances by the Tuku Kamek Group and the Kelab Asal Main Dayak (Kemada), captivating the audience with their dynamic and colourful presentations.
Rundi said the July 22 event was a very meaningful one as it was the first time Wan Junaidi visited Bintulu as the TYT, and expressed his gratitude to all people who showed their strong support to the celebration.
Prior to the Sarawak Day gathering, he added the Old Bintulu Airport ground had been filled with various activities since July 12 with the grand Sarawak Agrofest event taking place.
“Some 460,000 individuals visited Agrofest with over RM5 million in sales generated from the event.
“The selection of Bintulu as the host for the historic celebration this year was perfect because Bintulu was the first meeting place for the State Legislative Assembly in 1867,” he said.
Sarawak Protocol, Ceremonial and Event Management Unit director Hamdan Sharbini, meanwhile, said the celebration achieved remarkable success due to the substantial turnout and positive response from participants and members of the public.
“The community in Bintulu has always shown extraordinary support towards grand events organised by the Sarawak government,” he said when chairing the post-mortem meeting of the Sarawak Day 2024 celebration implementation committee on Tuesday.
The evening programme featured a special musical theatre performance by Pantomin Muzikal Sarawak Maju Makmur, starring notable actors such as Azam Pitt and Anding Indrawani.
The talents of Sarawakian youth were also showcased with performances by Sulaiman Usop, Daus Eli, Chien Ng, Melissa Francis and Roxy Ixzy, alongside popular artistes like Dayang Norfaizah and Bob Yusof.
For the grand finale, there was a spectacular fireworks display that lit up the night sky, leaving attendees with unforgettable memories of the historic celebration.
The event not only celebrated Sarawak’s progress, but also reinforced the unity and cultural pride of its people.
