KUCHING: Sarawak Energy is reinforcing its commitment to the people of Sarawak through targeted social investments in crucial areas such as education, environmental management, cultural heritage, and community development.
In a statement released today, the state’s government-owned energy developer and power utility emphasized its focus on education and youth, specifically dedicated to creating economic opportunities for Sarawakians and supporting community-driven initiatives.
“As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) endeavours, Sarawak Energy supports the educational and social welfare needs of communities throughout Sarawak.
“The company also prioritizes sustainable project implementation, transparency, and active community engagement,” it stated.
Among its key educational initiatives are the Sarawak Energy Scholarship Programme, which offers an annual budget of RM16 million for eligible Sarawakians, and the Sarawak Energy Bursary Programme, which allocates RM300,000 annually.
Furthermore, Sarawak Energy has established four Education Funds for communities near the Bakun, Murum, Batang Ai, and Baleh hydropower projects and provides Academic Incentives to commend outstanding students.
Sarawak Energy’s investment in education aligns with the Sarawak Government’s vision of nurturing a competent workforce to realize a high-income and developed economy by 2030.
In response to requests from educational institutions, Sarawak Energy also considers waivers of connection charges for school facilities.
“However, as per the Connection Charges Guidelines 2019, only specific organizations, such as places of worship, welfare facilities for vulnerable groups, and non-profit organizations, qualify for reduced connection charges.
“These guidelines are part of the Electricity Ordinance 2007 and outline the methodology and rates for new or altered electrical connections,” it concluded.
