Sarawak govt offers special STEM research grant for students

KUCHING: The Sarawak government, through the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, has introduced a special grant to support students conducting research in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said that the grant is available under the Sarawak Research Development Council (SRDC).

Using the example of students participating in the F1 In Schools competition, he acknowledged the challenges they face in completing such projects.

“To do this project, you need to do the research not only on its design, but also the aerodynamics, the velocity of the F1 car among others.

“That being said, I would advise the students to apply for the funding to the SRDC, so that proper research can be done more in the F1 project.”

He said this during the closing ceremony of the F1 In Schools State Level Competition at Farley Mall on today (Oct 1).

Additionally, Dr Annuar urged teachers and educators to assist students in applying for the grant.
“The grant must be utilised by students in Sarawak,” he added.

On another note, he highlighted the critical role of engineers in the development of Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole.

“Of course, other professions are important, but when it comes to innovation and technology, we need more engineers in this country.

“That’s why by 2026, the state government plans to offer free education to students interested in STEM and STEM-related subjects.”

He also suggested the need for a coordinating committee to oversee and plan STEM-related activities.
“For example, secondary school students might be more interested in mechanical aids—let them explore that. Other schools may have different areas of interest.

“A steering committee at the state level would not only monitor these initiatives but also encourage more students to get involved in STEM,” Dr Annuar said.
