KUCHING (Dec 13): Rising Sarawak junior star Jared Foo Dun Liang has been selected to join the national junior badminton squad under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for the 2026 intake.

Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) said in an official offer letter issued by BAM on Thursday, Foo has been awarded a scholarship placement at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM), effective Jan 1 2026, subject to the successful completion of medical assessments.

He is scheduled to report for duty at ABM on Jan 11.

Foo’s selection marks a significant milestone in his young career and serves as recognition of his consistent performances and strong potential.

The Sarawak Junior Under-16 champion has delivered commendable results at both state and national levels.

In November 2025, he was nominated by SBA for BAM’s Talent Identification (TID) programme, where he impressed national coaches and secured his place in the elite national junior setup.

SBA president Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar hailed the achievement as a proud moment for Sarawak badminton.

“Foo’s selection into the national junior squad reflects his dedication and discipline, as well as the effectiveness of SBA’s structured junior development and talent identification pathway.

“We are confident that his exposure at Akademi Badminton Malaysia will further unlock his potential at the highest level,” he said.

SBA honorary secretary Datuk Dr Wan Khalik Wan Muhammad echoed the sentiment, highlighting the importance of a clear development pathway.

“Foo’s journey — from Sarawak Junior Under-16 champion, to SBA nominee for the TID programme, and now a member of the national junior squad — demonstrates how Sarawak players can progress through the right system,” he said.

“SBA remains committed to identifying, nurturing and supporting young talents in close collaboration with BAM,” Wan Khalik added.

SBA extended its heartfelt congratulations to Foo and his family, and looks forward to supporting him as he embarks on this important new chapter with the national junior team.
