KUCHING (Aug 24): Sarawak’s exceptional dedication and sportsmanship during the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI), where they emerged as the overall champions, highlighted the state’s readiness to host even larger sporting events in the future, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
At the Games’ closing ceremony held at Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya here, graced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Abang Johari expressed his gratitude to Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh for her support of the organising committee in Sarawak.
He also congratulated athletes from across Malaysia and Brunei for their remarkable performances.
“I commend the Sarawak contingent for their outstanding efforts and congratulate all those who have trained Sarawak’s athletes, leading us to become the overall champions of Sukma XXI.
“Looking ahead, Sarawak is prepared to co-host the SEA Games in 2027,” he said.
Abang Johari also highlighted the impressive camaraderie and harmony displayed by athletes throughout Sukma XXI, noting the evident unity and competitive spirit among the youth, with many setting new records.
He further congratulated all athletes and emphasised that the spirit of sportsmanship, unity, dedication, and discipline will ensure a bright future for Malaysia’s youth and the nation as a whole.
“The Sarawak government remains committed to supporting sports development nationwide,” he said.
While acknowledging that no event is perfect, Abang Johari praised the Sarawak government for its excellent service during Sukma XXI and expressed hope that the event would serve as a benchmark for future sporting events.
