KUCHING (Aug 16): Sarawakian golfers Mirabel Ting and Anson Yeo dominated the opening round of the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) golf events at the Sarawak Golf Club in Petra Jaya here today.
Miri-born Mirabel, 19, topped the leaderboard with three-under 69, while 18-year-old Yeo shared the top position with Muhammad Danial Muhammad Nazari of Terengganu with a score of one-under 71.
Speaking to The Borneo Post after the opening round, Mirabel said she was quite pleased with her performance today and she hoped to enjoy her time representing the Sarawak team at the national competitions.
“I played consistently today. The wind started to pick up a little bit through the front nine and I made another mistake on the 7th hole but made two good saves on the eighth and ninth holes with a birdie and an eagle,” she said.
Ng Jing Xuen of Federal Territories, Sohniya Chandra Mohan (Johor) and Wang Xin Yao (Perak) shot a one-over 73 to tie for second place in the leaderboard today.
Mirabel said this Sukma competition would be the last tournament she is taking part in before flying back to the United States of America to continue her studies.
“Hopefully, it will end on a good note and hopefully, it will be a gold medal for Sarawak,” she said.
Meanwhile, Yeo carded a one-under 71 in the opening round with four birdies and three bogeys. Muhammad Hariz Muhammad Hezri of Perlis and Putera Haikal Hakeem Halim (Pahang) tie for second place with a par 72.
