Sarawakku Sayang opening draws nearly 7,000 in Betong

BETONG: Nearly 7,000 people attended the opening of the Sarawakku Sayang programme here today (Sept 26), with an even larger turnout anticipated over the weekend.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the three-day programme brings together 47 agencies offering some 150 services covering administration, digital innovation, entrepreneurship, education, health, welfare and other areas.

He said the programme provides an opportunity for the public to better understand the various government initiatives and services available to them.

“I was informed that nearly 12,000 people visited yesterday. I think even more will come today.

“Tomorrow, the target is to surpass the turnout recorded in Sarikei. Sarikei had 115,000, so Betong should reach 120,000. Can Betong do it?” he said.

He said this when speaking at the programme, officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, here today (Sept 26).

Uggah said the programme, held from Sept 25 to 27, features exhibitions and service counters at the Sarawak Pavilion.

“This is an opportunity for the people of Sarawak to understand the programmes being implemented for them.

“So don’t waste this opportunity. Take your time and have a look. Do not miss this opportunity as it could help you,” he said.

The programme also featured symbolic presentations under several state initiatives, including the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) and Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS).

Under FTES, 10 students from the constituency who secured places at Sarawak government-owned universities received their offers symbolically during the programme.

Each recipient is entitled to comprehensive sponsorship covering full tuition fees, accommodation and living allowances throughout their studies, valued between RM60,000 and RM174,000 per student depending on the programme pursued.

Meanwhile, 26 students have been selected to study at YSISS, with five receiving their offers symbolically during the programme.

Each selected YSISS student will receive RM115,000 in funding over five years, covering school fees, textbooks, hostel accommodation, meals and other learning facilities.

The programme also saw a symbolic presentation to 10 SKAS recipients from Betong Division, comprising senior citizens, households and single individuals.

Uggah said Sarawakku Sayang reflects efforts to bring government services directly to communities and ensure initiatives reach people across Sarawak.

“The aim is to provide the best services to the people wherever they are and to ensure that no one is left behind,” he said.
