Seniors and youths vie for Kuching Open Squash Tournament honours

KUCHING (Oct 14): Qharzai Ishtiaq Khan and Pheobe Liu Cai Ni were crowned as Boys U15 and Girls U15 champions of the Kuching Open Squash Tournament which ended at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Petra Jaya yesterday.

Qharzai of Kuching topped the Boys U15 league competition with four wins followed by Sebastian Brody Chin, Ong Hung Nong, Azief Mukhriez and Joe Vikneswaran in second to fifth placings.

Phoebe from Miri won all her league matches to claim the title. Finishing second to fourth were Chen Jing Wen, Sumayyah Madzali Khan and Amber Az-Zahra Mohammed Helmi.

Yong Wan Siang also from Miri was the Boys U17 champion with three wins out of three matches followed by Bonaventure Scott Chin, Arief Mukhriez and Muhammad Shamil Daniel.

Bryson Wee Chen Yaw of Sibu edged Gabriel Chia 3-2 in the final of the Boys U13 category which attracted 12 players. Lucas Goh An Ping was third after beating Josiah Lau Hui Yuan 3-0 while Ivan Teo Jing Kai was fourth.

The Men’s Open title went to development coach Muhammad Arslan followed by Marcus Lee Jia Dong, Denhalm Tan, Nicholas Tan Zheng Xin and Nevelton Jinggan Mawan.

Other winners included Law Fung King (Men’s Veteran), Jarvyn Ling Jin Hyun (Boys U11), Mohd Liang Shahid (Boys U9), Nur Putri Dayana (Girls U13) and Chen Jing Xin (Novice).

Prizes were given away by Kuching Squash Racquets Association president Vikneswaran Tharumalingam, vice president Shaukat Khan and committee member Sim Chin Kheng. The tournament, organised by Kuching Squash Racquets Association and sanctioned by Squash Racquets Association of Sarawak, attracted 72 participants from Miri, Sibu and Kuching.
