SIBU (Aug 29): The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) is prepared to ensure the safety of the community in light of the forecasted heavy rains and thunderstorms expected to hit Sabah and Sarawak until next week.

Bomba Sibu Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said the fire department has taken the essential measures and upgraded rescue equipment, machinery, marine assets and personnel.

“As a proactive measure, additional resources from nearby stations will be deployed along with the necessary rescue equipment.

“Additionally, we will remain active in our communication with other rescue agencies to ensure a swift and effective response,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Andy added he had ordered to increase the patrols at high-risk areas, and that public awareness campaigns are being launched to educate the community about safety measures during heavy rain.

Apart from that, an emergency operations centre had also been set up for immediate assistance when needed, he said.

Andy mentioned that several low-lying and riverside areas have been identified as high-risk zones.

“The fire department will closely monitor these areas and be ready for any potential evacuation if required.

“Bomba Sibu Zone is also working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), disaster management agencies and the local authorities,” he said, adding that this collaboration involves sharing weather information, resources and coordinating rescue operations.

Moreover, Andy advised the public to remain vigilant and follow weather updates through official channels.

He urged the people to avoid unnecessary travel and to move to a safer location if the areas are at risk of flooding, as well as to always bring necessary documents and sufficient supplies with them.
