SIBU (Oct 6): Police here have busted a telecommunication tower cable and battery component theft gang with the arrest of three local men, known as ‘Geng Dexter’.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said with the arrest, police believe they have solved 15 cases related to telecommunication tower cable theft involving losses of RM45,000.

He said the suspects were apprehended following a series of raids on Oct 3 and 4, as part of a special integrated operation codenamed ‘Ops Lusuh’.

“The gang, which comprised three local men aged between 28 and 40, has been actively involved in cable theft since early this year.

“Their modus operandi involved targeting telecommunication towers in isolated areas to steal cables and battery components, which they then resold for profit,” he said in a statement.

Zulkipli added that background checks on the suspects found they have various prior criminal records, involving property crimes and drug abuse.

He said the suspects are currently being remanded for further investigation.

“All cases related to the arrest are being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.”

He thanked the public, especially the Sibu community, for their cooperation and for channeling information that led to the bust of the criminal gang.
