Sibu Central Market which has been experiencing poor business will undergo changes next year so it can attract customers.

Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting said a new development plan would be drawn up by January.

In his address at the council full board meeting, he said the market had not been doing well since the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

“We want to transform the fish section of the central market,” he said.

Ting added that about 40% of the fishmongers in the market had stopped trading because they were not getting enough customers.

“We cannot leave the fish section empty.

“The council will form a committee to come up with a plan for the market.”

Pork and vegetable sellers in the market, he said, were also not doing well as those items were sold elsewhere in Sibu.

He feared that if the council did not do anything to address the matter, the traders would continue to suffer.

“I welcome new ideas from all quarters,” he added.
