KUCHING (March 9): A total of 14,818 residents in Asajaya District would benefit from the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) initiative this year to help ease the cost of living.
In stating this, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah hailed the assistance as reflecting the Sarawak government’s continued commitment towards safeguarding the welfare of the people, particularly those in the lower-income group.
“Of the total recipients in Asajaya, 7,532 recipients from the household category will receive RM950 each.
“In addition, 1,883 recipients in the senior citizen category will receive RM500 each, while 5,403 individuals in the single category will receive RM300 each,” said the Asajaya assemblyman, as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
The state minister said this at the ‘Lan Berambeh Sungkei Belia @ Asajaya 2026’, which took place at the Asajaya Sports Complex last Saturday.
It is informed that SKAS would be disbursed in three phases this year: the first on March 10, followed by July 7 and Nov 10.
The Sarawak government has allocated RM640 million for the implementation of the initiative this year.
Earlier, Abdul Karim took part in distributing 1,500 packs of ‘bubur lambuk’ to members of the public as part of efforts to enliven the Ramadan month.
A total of 1,000 packs were prepared by the Malaysia Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam), while 500 were contributed by the Asajaya branch of Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas).
Abdul Karim also presented Hari Raya Aidilfitri contributions to 300 ‘asnaf’ (those eligible to receive welfare aid) from his constituency.
