KUCHING (Sept 30): Sarawak’s robotics teams have achieved remarkable success at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Open Championship 2024, held in Brescia, Italy from Sept 25-28.
SMK Chung Hua Miri won the Robo Sports title, while Institut Pendidikan Guru Miri Campus was placed second in the Robo Mission category and SJK(C) Chung Hua Miri finished sixth among the 52 teams, said a press release today
The SMK Chung Hua Miri team members were Elson Kieu Chee Yang, Sim Zhi Yang and Sasha Liz Liew, coached by Lai Jia Ling.
The Institut Pendidikan Guru Miri Campus team included Chang Pei Ru, Muhammad Asy Syakirin Razlan and Desmond Sii Chong Sheng, coached by Dr Hu Laey Nee and Dr Norsarihan Ahmad.
The SJK(C) Chung Hua Miri team comprised Kieran Chia Yuen Soong, Kingsley Yeo Eng Sing and Shermaine Yong Ee Shuen, coached by Wong Ma Li.
These Sarawak teams were supported by the state Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD).
“This victory is a significant milestone for Sarawak and Malaysia in the global robotics landscape.
“It is a testament to the dedication, hard work and talent of the students, their coaches and all those who have supported their journey,” said MEITD.
The WRO is a global robotics competition for students aged eight to 19, aimed at promoting robotics education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The competition featured four categories namely Robo Mission, Robo Sports, Future Innovators and Future Engineers.
A total of 238 teams from 47 nations competed in the WRO 2024 while three out of the six teams sent by Malaysia hailed from Sarawak.
