KUCHING, Jan 30: SMK Merbau, Miri etched its name in history when one of its students, Theodora Pei Ern Huei, was selected as one of only 30 students nationwide to be granted an audience with Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, at Istana Negara, in recognition of her outstanding achievements at the international level.
The historic milestone was shared by the school through its official social media platforms on Thursday (Jan 29), describing the royal audience as a special Istana Negara invitation, held for the first time and reserved exclusively for a small group of exceptional students from across Malaysia.
According to the post, the honour marked a proud and momentous occasion not only for Pei, but also for the entire SMK Merbau community, as it represented the highest form of national recognition for student excellence and placed the school firmly in the national spotlight.
The school highlighted that Pei’s success is the result of her all-round excellence, noting that she has consistently demonstrated strong academic performance while also excelling in co-curricular activities, earning recognition at both national and international levels and bringing pride to Malaysia.
In acknowledgement of her achievements, Theodora was also named Tokoh Pelajar (Student Icon) and received the Bintang Kokurikulum (Co-curricular Star Award) as well as the Bintang Akademik (Academic Star Award) during the 2025 Excellent Student Awards Ceremony.
SMK Merbau described Pei’s journey as a source of inspiration for its students, underscoring the values of consistent effort, discipline and the courage to dream big as key factors behind her success.
The school also expressed its deep appreciation to its teachers, crediting their dedication, patience and commitment in nurturing student potential and contributing directly to Pei’s remarkable achievements.
Congratulatory messages were extended to Pei’s parents as well, with the school emphasising that the milestone was the result of collective effort between student, family and educators.
In its closing message, SMK Merbau encouraged other students to remain confident and resilient, reaffirming the belief that every dream can become a reality through perseverance and hard work. — DayakDaily
