KUCHING, Aug 27: Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has issued a stern warning to sports associations that failed to obtain any medals or improve their performance during the recent Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024.

He said although Sarawak has emerged as the overall champion at the Games, a post mortem will still be done immediately to improve the sports industry in the State.

“At this year’s Sukma, there were sports bodies that did not reach the target,” he said at a press conference in Kuching yesterday.

Abdul Karim further explained that for every Sukma, sports bodies will set targets with some showing excellent performance and some also failing to get any medals.

The outstanding ones like diving, he said, has set a target of three gold medals but had showed an amazing performance and bagged nine gold medals instead.

“Those who failed are like the cycling association where they haven’t won any gold medals yet; how many years has it been?

“At least karate already has one gold while sailing won two gold (medals). There are still sports bodies that have failed to win medals until now.

“An association like this sometimes I feel can’t be managed anymore and it’s time to leave,” he added. — DayakDaily
