BINTULU: Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) will be working on a bamboo planting initiative.

Both parties have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which heralds a strategic collaboration in promoting bamboo planting and community development in the areas surrounding the port operations and communities under BPHB’s supervision.

As part of this initiative, BPHB has taken the initial step by planting 1,700 bamboo seedlings in the Bintulu Port and Samalaju Port areas.

STIDC deputy general manager Hajah Haluyah Awi, representing the general manager at the MoU exchange ceremony, emphasised that this initiative will not only contribute to the development of the bamboo industry in the state but also benefit the local community by providing job opportunities and economic development.

“This step aligns with the Sarawak state government’s efforts to develop the bamboo industry as a sustainable additional economic resource,” she said.

Meanwhile, Sustainable Resource Management assistant general manager Hamzah Morshidi, stated that bamboo planting is a crucial effort to ensure environmental sustainability and support the green initiatives undertaken by the Sarawak state government.

Thus, through this collaboration, STIDC is confident that it will create more opportunities to advance the bamboo-based industry, contributing to both economic and social development in Sarawak.

Earlier, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg witnessed the MoU exchange between STIDC and BPHB.
