SIBU (Oct 6): The Borneo International Street Dance Festival 2024, which kicked off here last night, is a prime opportunity to showcase Sibu to the world, said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.
He said this marked the beginning of a new chapter in Sibu’s journey as a vibrant cultural hub.
“We are proud that Sibu is hosting one of the largest street dance and K-pop competitions in Malaysia here. This festival is not just about competition; it’s about culture, unity and celebrating diversity,” he said in his speech when officiating the festival at the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here.
Chieng added street dance and K-pop have captivated millions of people worldwide, and today this dynamic culture has found its place in Sibu.
“Through this event, we aim not only to boost tourism but also highlight the richness of Sarawak’s cultural heritage on the international stage. Youths are the heartbeat of this movement and I am proud to see them embracing this platform to showcase their talents,” he said.
He also mentioned the ‘Blast Your Stage’ programme in this festival, now in its Stage 6.0, is proof of the success of initiatives like The Stage.
“Through youth-driven programmes like this, we are creating professional spaces where young people in Sibu can express themselves and share their creativity with the world.
“To all the participants, this festival is a celebration of your hard work, passion and creativity. Whether you’re here for the K-pop competition or street dance competition, today is your time to shine,” he said.
