KUCHING (Aug 14): Melaka has signalled strong intentions of retaining their overall champions crown in wushu by making a clean sweep of the men’s and women’s nanquan gold medals, the first golds in wushu on the first day of competition at the Sarawak Wushu Training and Competition Centre, Sarawak Sports Complex in Petra Jaya.
Bryan Ti Kai Jie set the pace for Melaka by bagging the first wushu gold of the meet after he put up an impressive performance to score 9.600 points.
Foo Mun Fei of Perak and Sarawak’s Fung Tai Leong were tied on 9.560 points, but it was the former who was awarded the silver following the points decision of five judges.
Another Sarawakian, Vanness Lim Song Yi was placed in 11th spot out of 17 contestants with 9.316 points.
In the women’s nanquan event of 15 contestants, Melaka’s Tan Pei Ler topped the field with 9.500 points, followed by Eunice Pang We En of Johor and Gillian Ong Ying Sze of Penang with 9.496 points and 9.493 points, respectively.
Sarawak’s Belda Chan Zhi Yi and Elizabeth Beckxia could only manage eighth and ninth place with 9.013 points and 9.003 points, respectively.
Four other taolu events – women’s tajijjan, women’s changquan, men’s changquan and men’s taijijian will also be competed today.
