MIRI (Aug 14): Johor is targeting six gold medals and a total of 12 medals from the six sports hosted by Miri in the 21st Sukma.

Its deputy chief of contingent Dato Mohd Noorazam Datuk Osman said they are aiming for gold medals from rugby and women’s softball.

Johor is the champion in both sports in this year’s Under-21 national championships.

Apart from the six golds he called the remaining six medals as ‘plus’, “meaning, if we can change from silver to gold.”

He noted, however, that some of these six sports such as pencak silat, karate and sailing are “subjective”. Fencing is also competed in Miri.

“You will never know,” he told reporters after checking the venue for sailing at Marina jetty here today.

The southern state is represented by five athletes who will take part in four of the 14 events in sailing: ICLA 3, ICLA 7, International 420 and men’s optimist.

Johor emerged as overall champions with 77 gold, 52 silver and 43 bronze medals at the last Sukma held in Kuala Lumpur two years ago.
