SIBU (March 18): Stepping back from active politics, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong branch advisor Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck has handed over party affairs and grassroots service to the younger generation, choosing to prioritise his health and well-being.

Speaking at his birthday celebration organised by the SUPP Dudong and Sibu Jaya branches, he said the time had come for new leaders to take over.

“I joined SUPP at 18 and, after years of service and internal struggles, both Dudong and Sibu Jaya branches are now running smoothly.

“I no longer interfere much in party affairs and will let the younger generation carry on,” he said.

Soon also emphasised the importance of maintaining health, urging regular medical check-ups regardless of age.

“Do not assume that being young means you can ignore your health. Monitor your blood pressure and blood sugar regularly. If unwell, seek treatment; if healthy, continue to exercise,” he said.

The celebration, attended by party members and supporters, featured 21 tables and reflected strong camaraderie.

SUPP Dudong branch chairman Wong Ching Yuan credited Soon with the establishment of both the Dudong and Sibu Jaya branches, praising his leadership, integrity, and electoral record, which includes four victories in the record, which includes four victories in the Dudong state seat, including one uncontested win.

SUPP Sibu Jaya branch chairman Chiang Hsien Ping highlighted Soon’s efforts in visiting longhouses to provide health information and assistance despite limited infrastructure.

The event also included a cake-cutting ceremony and the presentation of the Party Spirit of Contribution award to Wong Ya Jin.
