UNIVERSITY of Technology Sarawak (UTS) will offer free education to all Sarawak folk from 2026.

Its vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said the university started its zero-fee foundation programme two years ago.

“This initiative (free education) is in line with Sarawak’s vision for 2030.

“It will help propel the state into an economically advanced future,” he said at the UTS Alumni Graduation Night.

Prof Khairuddin said state-owned higher learning institutions would offer free education to high-school leavers and UTS would be the selected free education university in the central zone of Sarawak.

“Education is the cornerstone of progress and by offering free tertiary education, Sarawak not only prepares a skilled workforce to help it achieve its vision but also eases the financial burden on low-income families.

“UTS remains committed to shaping future leaders who will play a pivotal role in Sarawak’s economic advancement,” he said.

Prof Khairuddin said the graduation dinner was held to recognise the outstanding achievements of UTS graduates.

“I am thrilled to give out various awards such as the Leadership Excellence Award, a unique and exclusive recognition by UTS.

“It will be awarded to 120 deserving students.

“It is a testament to their commitment, dedication and good leadership demonstrated via various co-curricular activities,” he said.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled three state incentives for UTS students on Nov 10, 2021.

The UTS Foundation Scholarship covers RM10,000 tuition per student while the UTS Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships offer a 50% fee discount.

The UTS Bursary Scheme, in partnership with Sarawak Foundation, provides 80% tuition reduction for Sarawak’s B40 and M40 folk.

This scheme supports 100 bumiputra and 100 non- bumiputra students in the state annually.
