KUCHING, Dec 13: A first-time contestant and his teammate emerged as the highlight of the H&L “Grab All You Can” contest held in conjunction with the supermarket’s 66th anniversary celebration at H&L Xtra Eco Mall Petra Jaya here today after recording the highest haul among five competing teams, carting away goods worth RM8,173.

The winning pair — Roslan Jene, 40, a retired army personnel from Siburan, and Mohd Razi Asari, 28, who is currently unemployed, said teamwork and quick decision-making were key to their success during the five-minute supermarket dash.

Speaking to DayakDaily after the contest, Roslan said the experience was both thrilling and unforgettable, as it was his first time taking part in such an event.

“When the signal was given, I just grabbed whatever I could and pushed everything into the trolley within the five minutes.

“Thank you H&L for giving us this great opportunity,” he said, adding that while the items taken were mostly random, many were still everyday household necessities.

Meanwhile, Razi said coordination between them made a big difference, with both focusing on filling each other’s trolleys as efficiently as possible.

“We divided our tasks, and I was assigned to collect milk powder. We knew milk products were expensive, but I honestly didn’t expect the milk alone to total more than RM5,000.

“I plan to bring some home and give them to my cousins to feed their children,” he stated.

Razi further said one of the main challenges was identifying the pricier milk brands within the limited time.

“I wasn’t familiar with which brands were more expensive or which shelves to go to, so I quickly asked an H&L staff member nearby. Once I reached the aisle, I grabbed everything I could because we only had five minutes,” he added.

During the contest, all five winning teams raced around the supermarket to fill two trolleys each with as many items as possible, excluding electrical and tobacco products, within five minutes. The shopping spree at H&L Xtra was capped at RM10,000 per team.

Earlier, H&L Group marketing manager Jennifer Jong said the contest was organised as a gesture of appreciation to loyal customers in conjunction with the company’s 66th anniversary.

“Many of you have been with us since the days when H&L was just a small supermarket. Because of your loyalty and trust, we have grown into the hypermarket we are today. For that, we are truly grateful,” she said.

At the event, H&L also gave away RM100 gift vouchers to 60 lucky winners, as well as electrical items totalling RM10,000 to 40 winners.

Also present were H&L Group operations managers Edwin Ling, Choo Bui Tatt and Chen Nyuk Joon; area manager Betty Chia; and several store heads and executives, namely Jaiton Anuar (H&L Matang Mall), Wong Khing Kim (H&L Xtra Kota Padawan Mall), Henry Tang (H&L Kuching Sentral), Billy Tai (H&L Xtra Eco Mall), Goh Chun Yung (H&L Samariang) and Mohammad Ariffin Pawi (H&L Aiman Mall Samarahan).
