KUCHING (March 5): The Sarawak Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development will organise two large-scale Ramadan iftar programmes to enliven this year’s fasting month.

Its minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the first programme, Lan Berambeh Sungkey Belia@Asajaya 2026, will be held on March 7 at the Asajaya Sports Complex.

He said this would mark the first time the programme is being organised in Asajaya, with the aim of strengthening unity among the community and youth in the Samarahan division, particularly in Asajaya.

“At the event, we will also present contributions to about 350 asnaf recipients, in addition to distributing 1,500 packets of bubur lambuk to those attending.

“As this is the first time it is being held in Asajaya, we expect about 1,700 participants to join the breaking of fast.

“The programme will begin at 2.30pm and continue until after iftar,” he told a press conference at his office at Baitulmakmur II Building here.

Also present were State Deputy Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development ministers Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu and Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat.

Abdul Karim said a similar programme, Juh Berambeh Sungkei@Kuching 2026, will be held on March 14 at Padang Merdeka here.

For the Kuching event, he expects around 5,000 participants, including non-Muslims, to take part in the breaking of fast.

He said the programme has been organised for four consecutive years and is among the most anticipated events each Ramadan, as it is seen as a community gathering that promotes togetherness.

“We hope for good weather so that everyone can gather to break fast together while enjoying performances by the nasyid group Rabbani,” he said.

Abdul Karim also encouraged local restaurant operators and corporate bodies to contribute food for both programmes.

Contributions may be delivered directly to the event venues from 2.30pm onwards, including at locations in Mukah, Sibu and Lundu on March 7.
