KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9: Malaysian Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Minister Dato Sri Tiong King Sing has proposed a meeting with local authority and traders to upgrade Petaling Street and Jalan Alor areas prior to Visit Malaysia Year in 2026.
He said Petaling Street is an important location in the development of Kuala Lumpur.
However, the area faces management and security issues that affect its appeal as a tourist destination.
“Many traders rent out stalls or business licences to local/foreign workers, and the quality of the goods and the cleanliness of the area are often questionable.
“Therefore, I would like to remind traders to manage their stalls better and ensure the quality of the products sold.
“The government is not against foreign workers, but traders need to be actively involved in day-to-day management,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday (Sept 8).
Tiong further said his ministry plans to increase the attractiveness of Petaling Street.
“I will discuss and request the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to repaint some of the walls of the building in Petaling Street.
“I ask all parties to work together in this effort to ensure that Petaling Street welcomes tourists with its best appearance and becomes a well-known and must-visit tourist destination,” he added.
At the same time, Tiong who is Bintulu MP further thanked Malaysia Chinese Assembly Hall (MCAH) for organising Mid-Autumn Carnival 3.0 at Petaling Street last Saturday (Sept 7).
He believed that such an event is of significant importance to unite races in the country. — DayakDaily
