SIBU (Feb 23): A traditional Melanau food stall has emerged as one of the main attractions at the Ramadan Bazaar at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase II, drawing customers from across ethnic communities eager.

Operated by cousins Wielita Lanon and Mastiah Mataher, both 49, the Kuala Matu-based stall has been participating in the annual bazaar for eight consecutive years.

This year, they report record demand, with several signature dishes sellling out well before sunset.

Among the most sought-after items are umai, umai payak, sambal belacan, keladi (wild yam) vegetables, and traditional-style ‘daging masak kicap’.

Customers begin lining up as early as late afternoon, with many returning daily throughout the fasting month.

Welita said the encouraging response reflects growing interest in traditional cuisines and cross-cultural food experiences.

“When customers from different backgrounds tell us the flavours remind them of home, it shows that our traditions can be shared and appreciated by everyone,” she added.

While rooted in Melanau culinary heritage, the dishes have attracted Malays, Chinese, Iban and other communities, highlighting how food continues to serve as a unifying element in Malaysia’s multicultural society.

The cousins operate the stall only during Ramadan due to full-time work commitments.

However, sustained public support over the years has prompted them to consider opening a permanent eatery in the future.

The Ramadan Bazaar at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang remains a key seasonal platform for small traders and heritage food operators, offering both economic opportunities and a space for cultural exchange.
