MIRI: Parents of students at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Batu Niah are getting anxious about the future of their children’s education as the school has been declared unsafe and in need of relocation.
The school, which has been a cornerstone of the community, now faces an uncertain future due to structural concerns confirmed by the Public Works Department (PWD) over a year ago.
SK Batu Niah Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) chairman Sebastian Janting Takin, disclosed the collective worry of parents and educators today (Aug 24).
He revealed that the school had recently received official notification regarding the need to relocate due to the building’s unsafe condition.
“We have identified a plot of land for the new school location and have submitted an application for the construction of a new facility.
“However, the land application is still under process. We are appealing to Deputy Women and Child Development Minister Datuk Rosey Yunus to expedite the matter with the Land and Survey Department.”
The prospect of the school being unable to continue operations has heightened concerns, as it would leave students without a place to pursue their education.
Sebastian urged Rosey, who is Bekenu assemblywoman, to advocate for the construction of a new school with the Premier and relevant education ministers.
In addition to this pressing issus, he also expressed gratitude to Rosey for her contribution of an additional RM2,000 towards the SK Batu Niah Annual Athletics Championships, which took place the same day.
