Veteran Labuan basketball player dies after lunch with friend in Miri

MIRI (Sept 7): A 51-year-old veteran basketball player from Labuan died after falling unconscious on a five-foot-way in front of a cafe at Pelita Commercial Centre around 11am on Friday.

District police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, in a statement today, said the basketball player, who was in Miri for the 33rd Asean Basketball Championship happening this week, had just had lunch with a friend before the incident occurred.

Upon checks by paramedics from Miri Hospital, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, he added, without disclosing the man’s identity.

“The police ruled out foul play in this incident.

“The deceased was representing the Federal Territory of Labuan for the Asean Basketball Championship,” said Alexson.

The case has been classified as sudden death pending the outcome of a post-mortem.
